Andy Murray through but Wawrinka out in dramatic Wimbledon start

Andy Murray shrugged off worries about his sore hip to cruise through his opening match at the Championships, Wimbledon, but Stan Wawrinka suffered the big shock of the first day.
 
Murray beat Alexander Bublik 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 in the first match on Centre Court with a strong display that suggested he was coping well with the sore hip that has dogged him in recent weeks. He suffered no reaction when play was held up for 44 minutes due to rain and never looked in danger as he secured a second round encounter with Dustin Brown, who famously beat Rafael Nadal in 2015. 
 
Nadal hasn't looked like losing to anyone recently and while he has always been exceptional on clay, he was also looking good on grass as he comfortably defeated Australian John Millman in straight sets. 
 
Instead, it was the man he defeated in the French Open final, Stan Wawrinka, who suffered the shock of the day. Struggling with a knee problem that required ice treatment during the match, the three-time Grand Slam winner crashed out 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 to 21-year old Russian Daniil Medvedev.
 
Wawrinka had come into the tournament needing to win Wimbledon to join the select band of men to have won all four Grand Slams, but he has never won a grass court title and had also lost in the first round of the Aegon Championships. At 32, he may have few chances left to secure the one major tournament where he has never gone past the quarter-finals.
 
The other big name to bow out on day one was Nick Kyrgios, who had been forced to retire in the Aegon Championships in a bid to be fit for Wimbledon, but found his hip problem to be too much and conceded to Pierre-Hugues Herbert after losing the first two sets. 
 
While Murray came through easily enough, Alijaz Bedene was taken to five sets by the towering Ivo Karlovic in a match featuring four tie-breaks before the British number three finally secured victory. He took the final set 8-6 with the only break of serve in the match. 
 
Amid all the concerns about injuries, ladies' sixth seed Johanna Konta said she felt fine after defeating Hsieh Su-Wei 6-2, 6-2. Having hurt her back in a fall at Eastbourne, Konta has had intense physio to ensure she is fit. 
 
Elsewhere in the ladies' draw, there were wins for Venus Williams, French Open winner Elena Ostapenko, Viktoria Azarenka, Petra Kvitova, Simona Halep and Elina Svitolina. Dominika Cibulkova came close to a shock loss before finally taking the deciding set 9-7 against German Andrea Petkovic. Heather Watson is also through, but fellow Briton Laura Robson is out. 
 
Fans booking corporate hospitality for the ATP World Tour Finals in November may be watching closely as the men's draw takes shape, with Marin Cilic and Kei Nishikori among the other big names through already. Today (July 4th) will see Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Juan Martin del Potro and Milos Raonic in action for the men, along with an all-British clash between Kyle Edmund and Alex Ward. 
 
Day two will also see women's world number one Angelique Kerber in action as she starts her bid to go one better than last year's appearance in the final.
